Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Planning a new kitchen can be a stressful experience. With so many things to think about and decisions to make, it’s easy to lose your way and end up with something that falls short of your expectations. A new kitchen is a considered purchase so it’s natural to want something that’s going to tick all the boxes. If you’re considering enhancing your home with a new kitchen, here are some tips to help you plan:

The “working triangle”
This is a term used by many kitchen designers and means the following three things – cooking, food, preparation and cleaning (i.e. – sink area). Your kitchen needs to be functional even if you’re not the biggest fan of cooking, if your kitchen is not user friendly you will definitely regret it. When planning your kitchen, you need to think about where you want your commercial laundry equipment and the practicalities of how you will actually use the room.

Styling
Kitchen cabinets are the main design people see and is the most important part to achieving the look you want. If your home is of an open-plan design, this becomes even more important; you need to ensure that the style you choose is sympathetic to the decor in your main living area. If your kitchen is an entirely separate room, you can afford to be a little more adventurous.

Lighting
Having the right lighting can make your kitchen look a million dollars so think carefully before you buy. If you want a more contemporary design think about including spot lights and track lighting – this kind of styling really makes a difference. If your kitchen has a traditional style then think about choosing a more ornate style.

Colour
It’s important to think about what colour the surrounding walls and floor is going to be to make sure it all fits the look you want.
